“The Cool Ruler": A Night with Gregory Isaacs in Musical Form
On Saturday 7th June, I had the opportunity to attend and watch “The Cool Ruler”, at The Broadway Theatre; I have to say, I was thoroughly impressed!
Who was Gregory Isaacs?
In the heart of Kingston, Jamaica, a legend was born. Gregory Isaacs, hailing from the working class neighbourhood of Fletcher's Land, emerged as a beacon of reggae music that would resonate around the world. As we celebrate what would have been his 75th birthday, the musical "THE COOL RULER" pays tribute to this extraordinary artist whose smooth voice and suave presence captivated audiences everywhere.
Gregory's journey began in the bustling streets of Kingston, where the rhythms of American R&B blended with the vibrant sounds of local Jamaican music. Influenced by the thriving soundsystem culture, young Gregory found himself drawn to the magic of music. He took his first steps into the spotlight at school concerts and local shows, honing his unique vocal skills and developing a style that would come to define a generation. By the time he turned 18 in 1969, he was ready to embark on a recording career that would last over four decades, right up until 2010.
Affectionately known as the "Cool Ruler," Isaacs had a knack for connecting with his audience. His persona on stage was nothing short of magnetic, drawing people in with his charm and romantic ballads. He pioneered the "lovers rock" style of reggae, giving us timeless hits like "Night Nurse" and "Cool Down the Pace." His music not only echoed through the streets of Jamaica but also traveled across oceans, earning him a place as one of the biggest reggae performers globally.
Gregory Isaac comes alive!
As the curtain rose for the musical celebration, it became clear that capturing the essence of Gregory Isaacs was no small feat. The writer and director of the play, Anton Phillips, ingeniously wove together his famous songs to narrate the story of his life, highlighting both his triumphs and struggles. The star of the show Terence Wallen, delivered a captivating performance, almost effortlessly embodying Isaacs himself, as he delivered song after song of the legendary singer. I always say the mark of a good actor, is when one forgets who the person is in real life – he was superb.
With a well-chosen cast including Sabrina Diva, Tyra Maddison, Leanna Gallimore, Mark Thompson, Xaire Xose, and Kalldean Barton all excelling in both vocals and dance, the energy on stage was electric. The tight-knit Delroy Murray Band complemented the performers beautifully, creating an atmosphere that reverberated with the spirit of reggae. Another one to watch: Sabrina Diva, star quality, amazing vocals and endless energy!

Every detail was meticulously crafted, particularly in the dance routines. Choreographer Allison Mason truly outdid herself, leaving the audience in awe from start to finish. The crowd was alive, roaring with applause, whistles, and horns, creating an atmosphere that felt like a celebration of life itself. The ladies behind me were so engaged that they shouted out warnings and instructions during pivotal moments of the play, fully immersed in the experience!
As the night came to a close, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the chance to witness such a heartfelt tribute to Gregory Isaacs. The legacy of the "Cool Ruler" continues to shine brightly, inspiring new generations of artists and reggae lovers alike.
Kudos must be given to the, producers of the musical: Bagga John of BJ Production in collaboration with The Gregory Isaacs Foundation - three sold-out shows speaks volumes about the impact of this tribute! Even reggae star Tarrus "singer singer" Riley endorsed the production, adding to the excitement surrounding the event.
I eagerly await updates on future performances of this remarkable show, as it undoubtedly captures the spirit of a true cultural icon.
