ABAKUSH WOWS ROOTS STYLE AT THE RITZY!
But the excitement didn’t stop there!
The night was kicked off by renowned author and broadcaster Kevin Le Gendre, who engaged the audience in a Q&A about his new book, *Children of the Ghetto: Black Music in Britain Vol 2*. He dove deep into the rich tapestry of Black British music from the 1960s to the 80s, touching on genres like soul, jazz, reggae, and rock. The audience's insightful questions sparked lively discussions, and the buzz around the book translated into plenty of eager sales.
As the night progressed, the legendary Moa Anbessa took the stage and delivered a masterclass in roots reggae.
They seamlessly blended deep Rastafari-oriented rarities with dance favorites and a splash of lover's rock, all while paying homage to the iconic Niney the Observer in the second half. When the dubplates from Burning Spear began to roll, the energy in the room skyrocketed. The thrilling two-tunes each and tune-fi-tune finale was not just a highlight but an honor, with guest mic men adding that extra spice to the mix.
The vibe in the venue was truly something special, with an eclectic mix of faces—from reggae legends like Earl Gateshead and Reggae Man Stan to vibrant artists such as Pavan Kakarla of Monkey Sound System and Nefertari of Vinyl Sisters. Each attendee contributed to the lively atmosphere, dancing the night away and keeping the spirit of reggae alive.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Clive Plummer for bringing Abakush to the stage, to Roger for ensuring the sound was on point, and to the incredible team at Upstairs at the Ritzy and Ritzy Cinema for their unwavering support and hospitality. This night was pure niceness, and we can’t wait for the next installment of this unforgettable series! Stay tuned!
